...without Expensive Medications or Surgeries.
One of the most frustrating things in the world is not being able to participate in life's most enjoyable activities because your body isn't cooperating. An unfortunate fact is that many senior citizens in the world today have to miss out on life because of debilitating low back pain.
Many Low Back Pain sufferers over the age of 50 are quick to blame their condition on advancing age. While age does play a factor, there is usually a deeper cause to why their low back is in such bad
shape. The good news is that once you understand the usual core causes of low back pain in people around the ages of 50-65, you can actually do something about it with some very simple and inexpensive treatments. Once you understand what is actually causing your low back pain, you can actually do a lot to avoid the things that caused it (and finally be rid of the pain that you might have been dealing with for years).
So... If you are over the age of 50, what are the most likely culprits that have caused low back pain and kept you from experiencing life to the fullest?
What are the Most Likely Causes of Chronic
Low Back Pain when You're Over 50?
Low Back Pain can be caused by a lot of different things but, in people between the ages of 50-65, there are some usual culprits that are most likely the cause.
✔ Arthritis in the Hips or Spine:
When your hips or low back are injured or aren't functioning properly, your body does it's best to adapt to the situation so that you can keep moving. In the beginning this adaptation takes the form of muscles compensating for the issue. Over time the muscles can become weak and can no longer handle adapting to the stress on the body.
When muscle adaptation starts to fail, your body makes a more permanent adaptation to the stress that is being put on it. To do this, your body will start to change the structure of the skeleton in order to help. This is part of what causes the process of
degenerative arthritis in your body. While this "adaptation" helps your body deal with the stress that is being put on it, it also causes some very permanent issues that will eventually turn into chronic low back issues.
✔ Bulging or Herniated Lower Spinal Discs:
When you put continued stress on the "shock absorbing structures" in between the bony parts of your spine, they can start to shrink or perform in a way that isn't healthy. Think of your discs as balloons that are getting constantly squeezed in one direction all the time as you go about your day. The difference between bulging and herniated discs is usually the difference between the need for aggressive care or surgery (this can be determined via an exam and advanced imaging).
✔ Leg Issues that end up Causing Lower Back Issues:
Sometimes low back pain is simply a symptom of your low back adapting to issues in your knees and feet. Many times correcting the knee or foot issue is enough to take an enormous amount of stress off of your low back.
So now that you've learned a little bit about some of the most common causes of Low Back Pain in Older Adults, what can you do to deal with those issues and start relieving that pain that is being caused (and get back to functioning at a higher level)?
